Leaky water valves pose several different problems for home owners. The constant dripping sound can be an annoyance, the water escaping from the valve will elevate your water bill---and the liquid that rests on the floor or next to the foundation of your home will cause damage that may be irreversible if not taken care of immediately. Leaking water valves can be replaced, but the novice will find it easier, cheaper and quicker to replace the damaged fixture. All home owners should know a few basic plumbing skills, such as how to replace a leaky water valve.
Shut off the main water supply to the house. Locate the main supply valve just inside the home and turn it clockwise to prevent any more water from entering the plumbing system of the house. Open all of the water faucets in the house and allow them to run to purge all of the water from the system. Wait 3 hours for the system to cool completely if you replace a hot-water valve.
Place one pipe wrench on the pipe next to Flanged Safety Valves that is to be removed. Hook the second pipe wrench onto the valve itself. Spin the second pipe wrench counterclockwise while holding the first wrench firmly in place. Remove the faulty valve and discard it.
Wipe the pipe clean with a rag. Paint a thin layer of sealant, also known as "pipe dope," onto the threads of the pipe to make the pipe pressure tight and leak proof. Twist the replacement valve onto the threads of the pipe. Remember to hold the pipe with one wrench when you tighten the new valve with the second wrench. Restore the water supply to the house. Watch the faucets and turn them off when there is no more air coming out of the line and the water runs smoothly. Wipe up any water that leaked from the old valve with your rags. Check the new valve to be sure it's not leaking.
